The simplest market in football
Both Teams to Score asks one question: will each side score at least once in regular time? A 1-1, 4-1 or 2-3 all settle Yes; a 0-0, 3-0 or 0-2 settle No. Own goals count for the team credited on the scoresheet; extra time does not count in standard markets.
Its appeal is psychological as much as mathematical: a BTTS Yes ticket stays alive deep into the match regardless of who is winning, which makes it one of football's most-watched markets.
What actually drives BTTS probability
BTTS Yes needs both attacks to function and both defences to fail at least once. The statistical drivers are each team's scoring rate and concession rate — not the combined goal total. A 3-0-heavy team can be a poor BTTS pick despite big scorelines, because its defence keeps clean sheets.
In a Poisson framing (the model family our site uses), BTTS Yes probability is 1 − P(home blanks) − P(away blanks) + P(both blank). Typical top-league BTTS Yes rates sit near 50–53%, which is why prices usually hover between 1.80 and 2.00 on both sides.
Reading the stats without fooling yourself
Useful signals: clean-sheet percentage on both sides, failed-to-score percentage, and underlying chance creation (xG for and against) rather than raw recent scorelines. Five straight BTTS Yes results in samples of five matches is noise — league-season base rates plus team defensive quality carry far more information.
Context shifts the number: missing first-choice centre-backs or keepers push toward Yes; a fixture where one side parks deep (big favourite away, relegation defence) pushes toward No. Derbies are popularly assumed BTTS-friendly; historically they are roughly base rate.
How we price it
Our model estimates each team's scoring rates from weighted historical results, derives BTTS probabilities, and compares them against live prices — BTTS picks appear in the tips feed when the price exceeds the model's fair odds. As with every market: the edge estimate is statistical, individual matches are coin flips around it, and no BTTS streak means anything by itself.
Home side scores in 78% of home games and concedes in 55%; away side scores in 60% of away games and concedes in 70%. Independent-ish estimate: P(both score) ≈ 0.78 × 0.60 adjusted for defensive rates — the model lands at 56%. Fair odds ≈ 1.79, so a 1.95 price carries positive expected value; a 1.70 price does not, however open the match looks.

Standard BTTS markets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time only. Cup-specific 'to qualify' or extra-time markets are separate products with their own rules — check the market name carefully.
Is BTTS better than over 2.5 goals?
They overlap but answer different questions: a 2-0 result wins overs and loses BTTS; a 1-1 wins BTTS and loses overs. Pick the market that matches your actual view — two functioning attacks (BTTS) versus general goal expectation (totals).
