How odds formats relate

All three formats describe the same thing — the price of an outcome. Decimal odds are the total return per unit staked, fractional odds are the profit relative to the stake, and American odds are quoted around a 100-unit stake. Implied probability is simply the inverse of the decimal price: it tells you what chance the market is charging you for. Because bookmakers build a margin into every price, the implied probabilities of all outcomes in a market add up to more than 100% — the excess is the bookmaker's edge. Comparing the implied probability with your own estimate of the true chance is the foundation of value betting: when your estimate is higher, the price may be worth taking.

Converter FAQ

How do I convert decimal odds to implied probability?+

Divide 1 by the decimal odds and multiply by 100. Odds of 2.50 imply 1 / 2.50 = 40%. Remember the bookmaker margin is baked in, so the true chance is usually a little lower than the implied figure.

What is the difference between decimal and fractional odds?+

Decimal odds show your total return per unit staked (2.50 returns 2.50 including the stake). Fractional odds show profit relative to stake (6/4 means 6 profit for every 4 staked). They express exactly the same price in different notation.

How do American odds work?+

Positive American odds (+150) show the profit on a 100 stake. Negative odds (−200) show how much you must stake to win 100. +150 equals decimal 2.50; −200 equals decimal 1.50.
