Dead Rubber explained

A match with nothing riding on it for one or both sides — where motivation breaks the models and the prices.

A dead rubber decides nothing: the group already won, safety already secured, the final round of a settled league. Motivation asymmetries this large break rate-based models — a strong team with nothing to play for rests players and coasts, and its 'true' strength temporarily is not its strength.

These are the matches where model probabilities (ours included) deserve the least trust and where the market's information edge — who actually needs the points — matters most. Late-season and final-group-round fixtures earn a motivation check before any bet.

Worked example

Last group round: qualified side (rate-based win chance 60%) visits a team needing a point to survive. History of such asymmetries suggests the favourite's effective chance runs 10–15 points lower — 1.67 on a coasting favourite is the classic dead-rubber trap.
