When a Canadian makes sense — honestly

Every bet inside a Canadian carries the bookmaker's margin, and combining selections multiplies that margin just as it multiplies the odds. A system bet never improves your expected value over the same stakes placed as singles — what it changes is the shape of the outcomes: nothing returns until two selections land, in exchange for cheaper cover than the version with singles. That is a variance choice, not an edge.

The honest way to use one: pick selections that are each positive value on their own (our screener ranks the board by exactly that), keep the unit stake small enough that 26 bets fit your bankroll rules, and check every price before placing — a leg that drifted past fair value weakens every combination it sits in, not just its own single.

Canadian FAQ

What is a Canadian bet?+

A system bet on 5 selections made of 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 four-folds, 1 five-folds — 26 bets in total, each carrying its own stake. 5 selections: 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 four-folds and 1 five-fold — 26 bets. Also called a Super Yankee.

How much does a Canadian cost?+

Your unit stake times 26. At 1 unit per bet the full slip costs 26 units — the calculator shows the exact outlay as you type.

Why doesn't one winner return anything on a Canadian?+

Because the smallest bet in a Canadian is a double, a single winner completes no bet. You need at least two winners for any return — that is the trade-off for spending nothing on singles.

What happens to void selections?+

A void (postponed match, non-runner) is not a loss: every combination containing it is settled at odds of 1.00 for that leg, so doubles become effective singles and so on. Mark a selection Void in the calculator to see the effect.
