Stake Not Returned (SNR) explained

The free-bet settlement rule: winnings pay out, the token itself never does — halving a token's worth at evens.

SNR means a free bet returns winnings only: a £25 token at 2.00 pays £25, not £50, because the stake was never your money. Nearly all free bets settle this way, which sets their real value — a token converts at (odds−1)/odds of face value at fair prices.

The consequence: tokens extract more at bigger odds (50% of face at 2.00, 75% at 4.00) and are wasted on short favourites. It is the single most useful fact about free bets and the least advertised one.

Worked example

£25 SNR token: at 1.40 it can only ever win £10 — 40% of face gone before kick-off. At 5.00 it wins £100, converting ~80% of face value in expectation at a fair price. Same token, doubled real worth, one decision.
