Outright (Futures) Betting explained

A bet on a whole competition — league winner, top scorer, relegation — settled months later, with margin and dead money to match.

Outrights price season-long outcomes: champion, top four, relegation, golden boot. Two structural costs separate them from match betting: the bookmaker's margin across a 20-runner field is far larger than on a three-way match, and your stake is locked for months — dead money that could have compounded elsewhere.

The honest case for outrights is a strong early-season disagreement with the market that you expect to close. Betting the favourite in August at a price you could beat by waiting is the classic version of paying for impatience.

Worked example

Sum the implied probabilities of every title price in a 20-team league and you will often find 115–125% — a 15–25% margin, against 4–6% on a single match. The same bankroll rolled over match bets pays a much smaller total toll.
