Fold (4-Fold, 5-Fold…) explained

Bookmaker shorthand for accumulator size: the number of legs that must all win.

'Fold' counts the legs in an accumulator: a 4-fold has four selections, a 6-fold six, and every leg must win. The odds multiply and so do the failure modes — each added leg multiplies the payout by its price and the coupon's survival probability by something less than one.

The fold number is the fastest honesty check on any coupon: at typical 5% margins per leg, an n-fold hands the bookmaker roughly n×5% of expected value. A 6-fold is a ~30% toll dressed as a lottery ticket.

Worked example

Five legs at 1.80 each: 5-fold pays 18.9. True chance if each leg is fairly 55%: 0.55⁵ ≈ 5.0% — fair odds 19.9. The gap between 18.9 and 19.9 is five stacked margins; it grows with every fold you add.
